     Ethel McDowell Smith
, age 91, of 119 Massanut-
ten Manor Circle, Strasburg, died
Friday, March 30, 2001 at
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital,
     A funeral service will be con-
ducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at
Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.
Officiating will be Rev. James
Baseler. Burial will be in
Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.
     Mrs. Stokes was born January
18, 1910 in Lexington, a daugh-
ter of the late Graham McDowell
and Melinda Entsminger Smith.
She was a homemaker, a member
of the Church of Latter-day
Saints and was the wife of the
late Walter Lee Stokes.
     Surviving are six sons, Donald
D. Stokes and wife, Thelma of
Winchester, Charles W. Stokes
and wife Shirley, Walter E.
"Gene" Stokes and wife Mary,
Kenneth E. Stokes and wife
Betty and Ray M. Stokes and
wife Mae, all of Strasburg and
Roy L. Stokes and wife Bonnie,
Stephens City; eleven grandchild-
dren, Ronald Stokes, Bill Stokes,
Jr., Debbie Wakeman, Missy
Miller, Cindy Embrey, Eddie
Stokes, Tina Six, Mary Feathers,
      Jeff Stokes, Chanel Stokes and
Robby Thomas; eighteen great-
grandchildren, Craig Stokes,
Mari Stokes, Tamantha Johnson,
Jason Stokes, Michelle Stokes,
Zack Wakeman, Tyler Wakeman,
Cody Miller, Alissa Miller, Holly
Embrey, Cory Six, Sierra Six,
Logan Six, Jillian Stokes, Kristin
Feathers, Michael Stokes, Randy
Stokes and Michael Cutlip; two
step great-grandchildren, Jared
Pence and Travis Pence; two
Mikaylah Groger and Michael
     A granddaughter, Tammy Cut-
lip is predeceased.
     Pallbearers will be Greg Smith,
Bill Stokes, Jr., Eddie Stokes, Jeff
Stokes, Greg Wakeman and Todd
     Honorary pallbearers will be
Jody Miller, Mark Embrey, Carl
Smith, Jason Stokes and Jeff
     The family will receive friends
at the funeral home on Sunday
from 7 to 9 p.m. and will meet
there at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

     Walter Lee Stokes of Rt. 1,
Strasburg died Wednesday morn-
ing at 9:35 o'clock in the Shenan-
doah County Memorial Hospital.
He was 63.
     Funeral services will be con-
ducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'-
clock in the chapel of the Stover
Funeral Home. Interment will be
in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev.
Joseph P. Sheesley will officiate.
     Surviving with his wife, the
former Ethel Smith, are six sons,
Donald D. Stokes, Charles W.
Stokes, Walter E. Stokes, Ken-
neth E. Stokes, Ray M. Stokes
and Roy Lee Stokes, all of Stras-
burg; a brother, Houston Stokes
of Berryville; three sisters, Mrs.
Julian Martin of Strasburg, Mrs.
Ernest Ramey and Mrs. Robert
Grove, both of Front Royal; and
10 grandchildren.
     Mr. Stokes was an equipment
operator and maintenance man
for Shenandoah Valley Lime and
Stone Company prior to his re-
     He was born Sept. 15, 1906
in Warren County, a son of John
W. Stokes and Fannie Putman
Stokes. He was a member of the
United Brethren Church at Toms
     Pallbearers will be Allen
Strosnider, Frank Dellinger,
William Golliday, William Wal-
ton, Frederick Hockman and Dal-
las Keller.
     The body is now at the Stover
Funeral Home.
     The family will meet at the late
home at approximately one hour
prior to the Saturday afternoon
