In the first tour of duty he was a substitute for his brother Richard Hartless serving under Captain Thomas Bibbs, Fifth Regiment Virginia Militia. Honorably discharged on 18 Aug 1814 at Peach Orchard Camp Norfolk. In the second tour of duty he substituted for Jeremiah Shoemaker serving under Captain Isaac Tinsley, Eighth Company, Fourth Brigade on or about the 27th day of November 1814 and continued in actual service for the term of 2 months and 26 days and was honorably discharged on the 23rd day of February 1815 at Camp Carter.
