Who is CAPTAIN JOHN MT. PLEASANT (by Teresa Morris)
This is a message posted at the Tuscaroras.com discussion forum by Teresa Morris on February 26, 1998.
Captain
John Mt. Pleasant was of the English Army and his Oneida wife had a son
named John Mt.
Pleasant II.
He was raised at the TUSCARORA VILLAGE.
The Seneca Tribe at Genesee sold some of their land to Robert Morris. The
Niagara
Tuscaroras were going to lose their homes. They complained they were being
treated unfairly
and not receiving what was due to them. Morris held for them 2 sq miles as
the Senecas gave
then another square mile next to this property.
1801 and 1802 Longboard and Sacarusa went to NC to see if they could
obtain any money
for lands that use to be occupied by their people. With the help of the NC
legislature they
were able to arrange for migration of additional Tuscarora and also L E A
S E their C A R O
L I N A lands. They received $13,722 in a land fund. General Dearborn,
Secretary of War in
1804 was then able to purchase 4,249 acres from the Holland Land Company.
This helped
increase the reservation in Niagara County to 6,249 acres, 10 square
miles.
With the NY Tuscarora living in peace and possession of lands they could
call home another
chapter begins. The forsaking of old Tuscarora traditions and subscribing
to oral instructions
for Christianity.
