Tuscarora Migration 90 years 1713-1803 (this one's for you Maverick) (by Teresa Morris)
This is a message posted at the Tuscaroras.com discussion forum by Teresa Morris on February 26, 1998. ~note~ "Maverick" is my penname on the forum.
May 1713 with all h_ __ break out at Ft. Neoheroka a lot of
bloodshed was
spilled on NC soil. King Tom Blunt's followers became manipulated by the
whites and the
hostiles were homeless....wandering about. Initially the hostiles formed
small bands and
scattered into the woodsland/pocosins/swamplands where mosquitoes were so
big you could
saddle them just to survive. They lived off of whatever the Creator placed
in their tracks.
Many became so weak other hostile Indians moved in. But the strength of
these people was
carrying ancestral fires never to be extinguished..forever they will burn
and serve as
reminders. Opportunity presented itself and those rose up and came togther
in tribal strength.
Some "talked" into believing they should leave NC, fled to the Virginia
frontier. Some
proceeded on to join their Iroquoian relations. Bottom line....NOT ALL
MOVED from NC.
And just because others migrated to Virginia, Pennsylvania, did not cause
them to become
extinct.
Some Tuscarora lived in the Valley of Virginia. A village was located on
the Tuscarora Creek
also known as present Berkley County, West Virginia, Martinsburg. Other
Tuscarora settled
in central Pennsylvania. There were paths known to be traditional paths
for the Tuscarora to
travel back and forth from the North to the South. Some built their
lodges/cabins along a river
called the Juanita River around 1762. Others lived in Schuylkill County
near Tamaqua and
others in Wyoming County. This is known as Wilkes-Barre. Others lived
among the
Mohawks, Shawnese at Oquaga. Windsor Broome County, NY. Others lived near
Oneida
Lake 1736. Some migrated westward into the Genesee Valley and the Niagara
countryside.
Many of the Tuscaroras were said to have lost their "national identity"
during this moving
about. Fact is: They remained TUSCARORA.
